Virgins and Goddesses: mutual syncretic iconographies – Concept / Performance / Props and costumes : Violeta Luna | Video: Roberto Varea | Music: David Molina
The performance Virgins and Goddesses investigates the sacred feminine iconography, in particular, the inherent tension between notions of the profane and the sacred, with a focus on the juxtaposition of Mexican Catholic iconography, such as the Virgin of Guadalupe, and Aztec iconography, as in the fierce earth goddess Tlaltecuhtli. Luna integrates into this new work the complexity and contrasts of female religious iconography with contemporary issues of violence against women, present in the “femicide” affecting regions of Mexico, domestic violence, human trafficking, and migration.
