I am honored to be collaborating, writing/performing music to the world premiere of The Resurrection of SHE, a multidisciplinary, interactive performance that peruses the decades long artistic career of Rhodessa Jones. It is directed by Idris Ackamoor, founder of the legendary avant jazz band The Pyramids.

As one of San Francisco’s preeminent performers, Rhodessa’s work with her company Cultural Odyssey and The Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women have put her in the forefront of artists working in the field of “arts as social activism”. At the center of The Resurrection of SHE will be the ongoing work that Rhodessa conducts with disenfranchised populations around the world including her most recent work in Johannesburg, South Africa working with female inmates at the Naturena Women’s Correctional Center and her recent work with HIV positive women in San Francisco.

“SHE” explores the interstices of the global feminine narrative- both visually and aurally, in search of the universality of the human experience. “SHE” is a passageway into lives normally hidden from and forgotten by society – a revelatory journey of redemption and hope. “SHE” carves out a route to healing and towards a healthier future. Close to seven years of residency and performance activity in South Africa and America has been captured in photographs, video and audio recordings that will be featured in the performance – which unites the art of documemoire, multi media installation, and musical theater performance. Rhodessa will collaborate with visual artist/lighting designer Stephanie Johnson, set designer, Pam Peniston, musician/composer Idris Ackamoor, and sound designer David Molina to create the work.

Where: Brava Theater, 2781 24th Street, San Francisco, CA 94110
March 28 – April 7, 2013
Tickets $20-30
Gala Tickets $40-50

Discounts available to seniors, students and groups.

Tickets at https://www.vendini.com/ticket-software.html?t=tix&e=6db9e6e6a7733cba4e2a495a80bb4c2f

Rhodessa Jones is Co-Artistic Director of the critically acclaimed San Francisco performance company Cultural Odyssey. An actress, teacher, singer, and writer, Jones is also the founder and director of the Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women. On January 29, 2013 San Francisco Mayor Lee presented the 2013 Mayor’s Art Award to Rhodessa Jones for her “lifetime of artistic achievement and enduring commitment to the role of the arts in civic life”. Rhodessa was selected as an “ARTS ENVOY” by the U.S. Department of State, Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau in June/July 2012. She received grant support to journey to South Africa to continue her work in collaboration with Urban Voices Festival inside the Naturena Women’s Prison in Johannesburg, South Africa and then journey on to participate in the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa. She has received many awards for her work including a United States Artist Fellowship to support her work in 2007, an Honorary Doctorate from California College of the Arts, a San Francisco Bay Guardian GOLDIE Lifetime Achievement Award, an Otto Rene Castillo Award for Political Theater, and a San Francisco Foundation Community Leadership Award.

Color + Form + Frequency is a multimedia event featuring live music, video, film, and original instruments curated by composer, musician, sound artist, and instrument builder David Molina.

The evening features electronic musician and instrument builder Garrett La Fever. He collaborated with Molina in the construction of the instrument and installation piece Memory Web, which also features reactive video art by Mickey Tachibana. Approximately 80% of the instrument was built using materials found at salvage yards. It features 28 piano strings and resonant metal and wooden body parts. Upon playing the Memory Web, the strings trigger and manipulate the video images. Visitors describe the improvised performances on Memory Web as haunting, dark, meditative, future-primitive, Japanese sounding, and industrial trance inducing experiences.

In collaboration with live sound created by Joshua Churchill, John Davis will present a two channel film projection utilizing analyst film projectors, which allows Davis to control both the speed and direction of the film. Performing as a cohesive unit, the two create densely layered, yet expansive, environments of image and sound.

The closing performance of the evening will be experimental filmmaker Anna Geyer. Molina and Geyer will perform Lost and Found, a live film and soundtrack. Geyer processes 16mm film by hand to create dreamy degraded images and color fields, which are both evocative and nostalgic. She then takes the film and cuts them into loops of various lengths. For Color + Form + Frequency, she will mix the loops by hand on 4 modified projectors while Molina performs an improvised soundtrack on various acoustic and electronic instruments, and found objects.

Tickets: $8 pre sale, $10 at the door

I am excited to have my first solo exhibition, believe it or not!

To see the creation and progress of “Rusting Souls” go to my installations page.
CURATORIAL STATEMENT by Dorothy Santos of Asterisk Magazine:

Transience provides a retrospective look at David Molina’s theatrical scores and music compositions as well as his collaborative works with Bay Area artists including Garrett La Fever, Mickey Tachibana, Cause Collective, Susie Valdez, Victor Cartagena, Violeta Luna, Roberto Varea, and Anna Geyer. The exhibition presents existing and new interactive works such as Memory Web, which showcased at the 2012 San Francisco Fine Art Fair. For this particular exhibition, Molina will be presenting his latest interactive work, Rusting Souls, which entailed a deconstructing and reconstructing of the Cimbalom, an instrument originally from eastern Europe.

Spanning Molina’s installation works to a comprehensive discography, Transience assembles a collection of intricately re-imagined instruments, such as Homage to Musee Mecanique: A Game Of Time, The Chimes of Seven Spells, The Broken Heart Sings, a plethora of parts pieced together to create a multifaceted and unique experience of sound.

Hearing has the capacity to command our being by forcing us to listen and understand the world. The imagination works in conjunction with sound allowing us to envision our environment or awaken a long obscured tale. The works in Transience seek to envelop the listener into narratives and a tactile experience of music. With no specific starting point other than the listener, the exhibition emerges as a study of contemporary music making and how stories can be told through beautifully and meticulously strung notes by the artist-musician’s hand. Transience is an examination of how music affects our understanding of personal histories and interactions as well as our perceptions of sound.

Nov 9 – The Future Imagined: What’s Next?

I will be performing music as “Transient” and collaborating with video artist Ian Winters on a new multimedia piece called “Dots and Dashes”. Using electronics, live sampling, electric guitar, voice, and my body I will activate a light installation created by Winters, which reacts to sound and movement. We go on at 9:30pm, but the entire event starts earlier.

This piece is being created for the opening of “The Future Imagined: What’s Next”, curated by Hanna Regev, and is part of the 2012 ZERO Biennial.

The exhibit features over 30 artists who have created interactive models, electronic objects, multimedia, digital video, augmented reality, sound installations, emerging forms and new genres installations. These works will seek to facilitate a fresh discourse about contemporary art in the Digital Age: One that is deeply rooted in the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of the Silicon Valley.

The exhibition highlights the interplay between artists, technologists and scientists as they converge to artistically test the limits of what is possible in a technologically driven world.

Time 6:30 till 11:30pm.
Where: The Performance Art Institute at 75 Boardman Place
San Francisco, CA, 94103
Cost: FREE!!!
